Money can buy me love: The real cost of Valentine's Day

The Economics of Valentines Day
Via: Online MBA Blog

As the 'Hallmark Holiday' approaches, many of us will be scouring the shops for a special gift to give our loved ones. Let's face it, we all like receiving gifts but does a specific date have to dictate that? According to the above infographic, the answer is firmly yes. I guess you can buy love after all.

Over the next few days many of us will be happily parting with our hard earned cash, in return for numerous 'I heart you' cards and other tacky Valentine's Day crappery. All in order to prove our love to one another. When, in reality, i suspect a kiss on the cheek and the words "I love you" would suffice.

Love is free! An emotion we, as humans are capable of expressing for others at no monetary cost.

Right, must dash, I'm off to purchase a giant Gorilla teddy to tell The Boyfriend that I'm 'bananas over him'.

This is funny because this is the one holiday we semi save cash on. We kind of get slammed with birthdays and our anniversary so we save the money that we would spend on valentines day for the more important things. Don't get me wrong I am actually a huge fanatic of this hallmark holiday but it's just not as important to us as the others. We haven't even bought a single card for anyone. I tend to be more into the handmade stuff so that has a lot to do with it.

But other then that my husband, kids, and I just build sculptures together as celebrating it and then do a valentines themed dinner.

Is it weird I think people who spend money on V-Day are suckers? I told boyfriend I would like a card and would like it even more if he made it.

Wow. Valentine's Day is expensive. I think I dated one of the exceptions to the rule, though. I went on a date with a guy on Valentine's Day once, and he didn't even buy me a drink. Fortunately, I was drinking soda, so the bartender gave it to me for free. Maybe I should have gone on a date with him instead.

@Melissa The Valentine's themed dinner sounds nice, i wanted to bake heart shaped cookies but i was too chicken. My culinary skills are less that average :(

@Vapid Vixen That's a lovely idea and so much more personal.

@Neurotic Workaholic He could have at least offered, oh well his loss! Maybe the bartender would have made a much better date. Hooray for the bartender.
